1. What documents do I need to have in-order to be considered for work in the Middle East?
You will be required to have
a) Original birth certificate
b) Passport
c) Identity Card – NB: You must be over 21 years of age d) A CV
2. I have the required documents, what’s the next step?
Once you have the required documents, find the list of accredited agencies on National Employment Authorities’ website and share an email with as many agencies as possible (EmploymentAgenciesList). Cite your experience and interest, what documentation you have and attach your CV. Then await their response. Call or bring yourself to the agency’s office in person for more details.
3. What level of education is considered for low skilled jobs?
The lowest education experience is high school level (form 4).
4. What are some of the low-skill jobs?
The low-skill jobs include but not limited to domestic work, cleaning work, supermarket attendants, security guards, drivers etc.
5. What training must I have in-order to be considered for a Domestic Worker’s job?
Since year 2019, the Kenyan government requires migrants to get professional training for low skilled jobs. Domestic workers undergo a 2-weeks intensive training in Homecare Management in accredited institutions.
NB: If an agency promises work without this training, please note that they are rogue.
6. What units does the homecare management for Domestic Workers entail?
The course Curriculum consists of the following:
1. Homecare management which comprises:
- Housekeeping
- Childcare
- Laundry work
- Home nursing
- Catering
2. Support areas:
- Pre-departure training
- Lifeskills
- Labor relations
- Reproductive Health
Duration
The course duration is 2 weeks (14 days) full time.
Certification
This is offered by NITA (National Industrial Training Authority) on successful completion of the course and is mostly paid for separately from tuition fees.
Training and NITA Fees – Approximately between 20 and 25,000 Ksh
7. What training do the other low-skill jobs require?
The other low skills jobs such as driving, security guards etc. also require training in the following areas;
- Pre-departure training
- Lifeskills
- Labor relations
The training duration is 40 hours
8. Which training institutions offer the training for low-skill jobs?
All valid trainers are registered and confirmed by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). Visit their website for an updated list of training providers. Please see the list of Valid-training-providers-as-at-4th-december-2020.
9. What is pre-departure training?
The pre-departure orientation program / unit is devised for specific groups of workers who are vulnerable to exploitation such as domestic workers and low-skilled workers. This is important in ensuring that potential migrants can take advantage of ethical recruitment procedures, will have knowledge of employment rights and contracts of employment, and can benefit from information about integration and accessing services and support in the country of destination.
10. What should I expect from a placement agency after passing the interview?
NB: You should not pay anything to submit your documents or attend interviews. Once you pass the interview (s) with an agency, the next steps include; –
- The agency should enroll into training (if not previously trained in the above-mentioned units)
- The agency should give you a written contract of employment indicating employment terms and conditions for your signatures and confirmation
- The agency should initiate your medical check-ups, passport processes (in case you don’t have one) and travel arrangements
- The agency should ensure that you complete training and acquire the relevant certification
11. What warning signs should I look for in a rogue agency?
Rogue agencies will; –
- Promise you a job with no clear due process
- Not be in the National Employment Authority’s list of accredited agents
- Not work closely with a NITA accredited institute of learning or not mention the training required at all
- Not discuss the employment contract and terms with you
- Demand for money/payments from your initial engagement
- Not have a physical office. Etc.
